Carl C. Miller, 93, formerly of Bear Gap Road, Elysburg, passed away peacefully, with his wife of 72 years, Mildred Ida (Mensch) Miller, at his side. He went to be with his Lord on July 4, 2015, his Independence Day. He and his wife had been residents of the Manor at Susquehanna Village for the past three years.

Carl, born on Jan. 20, 1922, was the son of G. Clyde and Florence (Litwiler) Miller, in Numidia. In addition to his loving wife, he is also survived by his son, Eugene, and wife Donna, of O’Fallon, Ill.; daughter Bev, husband Ken Peirce, of Halifax, Pa.; grandsons: Sean, wife Gigi, of Mechanicsburg, and Brian, of Halifax; step-grandsons: Ken Jr., and James McKenzie; step-granddaughter: Dawn McKenzie, and several great-grandchildren; sisters: June Miller of Harrisburg; Peggy Tubberville of Catawissa, and Francis Kline of Center Valley, Pa.

He is predeceased by brothers: George, Charles, Gerald and Paul, and sisters: Hazel Mensch, Ethel Mensch, Grace Campbell and Elsie Levan.

Carl was a lifelong farmer who loved the land. He drove a two-horse team as a young man and eventually settled on his wife’s ancestral farm on Bear Gap Road in 1956. He delighted in showing the well-kept fields and straight corn rows. He especially enjoyed sharing his farm and the animals with his grandsons, Sean and Brian, who loved their “Pop Carl.” Music was also one of his pleasures and he often Entertained the family with old folk tunes. He then decided to build a dulcimer and learned to play that; thus, he made several for his family and friends. He continued with his craft, making banjos and violins. His craftsmanship amazed those who saw them and became treasured keepsakes for those who received them. He also enjoyed horseback riding and caring for his other horses and animals, as well as maintaining his beautiful gardens.

He once reminisced that “Carl C. Miller was born on January 20, 1922, in a little log house where his father was also born, as well as three uncles and two aunts. It was a beautiful home with red rose bushes and several white and blue lilacs that had a fragrance that stirred the soul in remembrance of the loved ones that planted them.” His loving and kind ways and gentle smile will be missed by his family and friends.
