Donald E. Stewart, 87, of Catawissa passed away February 7, 2018 at his residence. He was born August 2, 1930 in Danville, a son of the late Harry “Hack” and Dorothy (Stewart) Sassaman.
A lifelong resident of the Catawissa area. Donnie attended Catawissa High School. He represented his school in State Band playing his trumpet. After serving two years in the Air Force, he joined the United States Navy for almost four years. He last served onboard the USS Albany for two years.
Donnie served on Catawissa Council for three terms. He was a life member of the Catawissa Legion, Catawissa VFW, Catawissa Hose Company, and the Catawissa Boat Club. He was also a member of the Catawissa Lions Club, and Catawissa Military Band for over 50 years. He was a former member of Elysburg Lodge #349 F&A.M., and Scottish Rite Caldwell Consistory of Bloomsburg.
Surviving is his wife of 42 years, Shirley (Artley) Stewart, sons; Don Stewart of Orangeville, and David Stewart and wife Chris of Dunedin, Florida, daughters; Rebecca Sheaffer of Cleona, PA, and Stephanie Baylor and husband Jim of Catawissa. There are four grandchildren, Briana Magill, A.J. Baylor, David Stewart, and Taylor Sheaffer whom he shared the same birth date with, and one great-grandson James Magill. Donnie was a wonderful grandfather and will be missed by his grandkids. A lifelong fisherman, he loved teaching his grandkids how to fish. He also shared his interest in the Civil War with them.
Services will be Monday February 12, 2018 at 11:00 am at Christ United Evangelical Lutheran Church, 116 Church Street, Catawissa, with his pastor, Pastor Melody Sell officiating. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 am until time of service. Family and friends may send online condolences to allenrhornefuneralhome.com.
