Gary Lee Honabach Sr., 83, of Catawissa, passed away on June 18, 2022, at his residence. He was born April 19, 1939, in Shamokin, a son of the late Jay and Florence (Straub) Honabach.
He graduated from Coal Township High School and then joined the United States Army from 1958 to 1962, and then continued to serve in the National Guard. He was a member of St. Columba Catholic Church and served as a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus.
Gary relished spending time with his family, attending outdoor gatherings and playing pinochle. He enjoyed driving MaryLou throughout the countryside looking at the wind turbines, sunflowers, and taking in the scenic views along their travels which allowed them to experience local restaurants along the way. He was able to fulfill his lifelong dream of a cross country journey. Anyone who knew Gary would agree that he always had a smile on his face and he was a very giving person who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
He volunteered as a Little League coach and scout master in his earlier years. He enjoyed attending various events that his grandchildren participated in as well as attending Southern Columbia football games and watching Penn State and Seattle Seahawks football games.
Gary worked at American Finance, Metropolitan Insurance, Keller’s Wholesale, Catawissa Bottling, Catawissa Cracker Barrel, and Wise Borden until his retirement.
Gary is survived by the love of his life, the former MaryLou Mikulski, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage in February 2022; two sons: Gary L. Honabach Jr., wife, Kim, Kevin Honabach wife, Nancy, all of Catawissa; six grandchildren: Ashley Honabach, Amanda Honabach (Torrey Hoy), Corey Honabach (Jessie Moore), Allison Honabach, Zach Honabach, Isabelle Honabach: and one great-granddaughter, Paisley Hoy.
Services will be Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 27 Ringtown Mountain Road, Catawissa, with the Rev. Gordon Smith officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service.
