Gary L. Zimmerman, 78, of Catawissa, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday April 23, 2024 at home with his family by his side.
Born June 22nd, 1945 in Bloomsburg, he was the son of the late Marshall & Phyllis (Knouse) Zimmerman. He attended Bloomsburg schools and was part of one of the last classes that attended the Rupert one room schoolhouse. After school he enlisted and faithfully served 6 years in the Army National Guard.
On July 11, 1970 he married Darlene (Yocum) Zimmerman, and together they celebrated 53 years of marriage. Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Jeremy Zimmerman, Amanda Gearhart (Chris), grandchildren: Baylee & Bryar Zimmerman and Ben & Timmy Gearhart. A brother, Donald (Shirley); and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Leech.
In his early career he was a truck driver for the Alan Campbell and Gene Fleming trucking companies. Following that he spent the remainder of his career as a machine operator for Catawissa Lumber until his retirement.
Gary enjoyed the outdoors and hunting & fishing. He especially loved fishing and some of his favorite times were when he was out in his boat fishing with his family. He loved going to antique truck and tractor shows and enjoyed starting his day with an early breakfast at the truck stop and then a trip to a show. Camping with his family and grandchildren was something he routinely looked forward to each summer and he always enjoyed a good hot dog over the campfire. Gary also enjoyed model trains and each year at Christmas would set up a large display in his basement, which was also the place where he would regularly take in a good John Wayne or James Bond movie.
Most of all he loved being with his family, especially doing things with his grandchildren. He personally took on the role of babysitting each of them when they were young.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, April 29th at 10am at his church, Roaring Creek Valley UMC, 6 Orchard Dr. Catawissa, with his pastor, Adam Miller, officiating. Burial will follow at Esther Furnace Cemetery. Family will receive friends beginning at 9am at the church.
The family would like to extend a thank you to Compassus Hospice and a special thanks to his doctor, Rob Meloy and his nurse Lori.
Family and friends may send online condolences to allenrhornefuneralhome.com. The Allen R. Horne Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Catawissa is handling arrangements.
