Helen R. Litwhiler, 96, formerly of Catawissa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at Emmanual Center of Nursing, Danville. Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Litwhiler Sr., who passed away on September 16, 2001.
Born July 31, 1929, in Catawissa, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Szabelski) Gosciminski.
Helen grew up in Catawissa, and was a graduate of Catawissa High School. Helen began working at Emmenne Shirt Factory and later worked at the Register and Recorder office at the Columbia County Courthouse and Assessment Office where she retired in 1978 after years of dedicated service. She was also the register for Bureau of Vital Records and later served as the office manager of a congressional office in Bloomsburg.
Helen's faith was a guiding force in her life. She was a long-time member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, where she served with distinction as the Rosary Society past president, secretary for Helping Hands, a member of the parish advisory council, and heart fund chairwoman. Her involvement in the church was a reflection of her unwavering commitment to her faith and her community.
Her civic engagement extended well beyond the walls of the church. Helen was the Locust Township auditor, a member of Draft Board #50, and a democratic committeewoman for 23 years.
Family was the cornerstone of Helen's world. She is survived by her two sons, David Litwhiler, Jr. (Cathy) and Douglas Litwhiler (Deborah) both of Catawissa; a daughter Darlene Crawford (Robert) of Bloomsburg; eight grandchildren Amanda and Alyse Litwhiler, and Adam and Doug Litwhiler, Sarah Lopez, Kaitlin Jurewicz, Donna Bitner and Danny Tappe; and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a granddaughter Melinda Litwhiler; three brothers Walter, Anthony, and Edward Gosciminski, and three sisters Mary Millard, Josephine Hicks, and Victoria Ruckle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 29 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church 304 Slabtown Road, Catawissa with Father Martin Moran officiating. Burial will follow in Kulp Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, August 28 at Allen R. Horne Funeral Home and Cremation Services 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa.
