Henry Russell Leighow Jr.

Henry Russell Leighow, Jr., 80, of Danville, Pa., passed away Monday, Sept. 28th, after a long battle with medical issues. He celebrated his 60th anniversary in April to Barbara M. Leighow.

Born Aug. 21, 1935, in Catawissa, he was the son of the late Henry and Charlotte Leighow. He attended school in Catawissa before beginning a 25-year career with the U.S. Air Force. His military service took him to Germany, Taiwan and several locations in the U.S. The classified nature of his unit’s duties involving aerial reconnaissance was recently put on display in a ceremony at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Oh. He received the Air Force Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service awards while on active duty.  He also had a 17-year career with Lockheed-Martin in Colorado.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Michael of Danville, Pa., Brian of Reading, Pa., and daughter Lori and her husband Paul of Aurora, Co. He had one grandchild, Heather, currently living in Amsterdam. His sister, Dawn Wright, resides in Espy, Pa. He has many nieces, nephews and extended family throughout the United States. A retired Air Force master sergeant, he also volunteered for the American Red Cross and American Bowling Congress.  In addition to being an incredible father, uncle and grandfather, he was a lifelong N.Y. Yankee and Pittsburgh Steeler fan. An avid reader, his favorite hobby was picking, cracking and giving away black walnuts, as well as hunting, gardening, bowling and golf.

Services will be held at The Allen R. Horne Funeral Home, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 pm.  A private ceremony will take place Friday at Hillside Cemetery in Catawissa. Family and friends may send online condolences to allenrhornefuneralhome.com.
