JoAnn P. “Joannie” Cherwinski, 87, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, surrounded by those she loved most. She was born to Joseph and Anna Bronkoski on Jan. 27, 1938.
Joannie was a happy and fun person, always with a smile. She loved life with her family and friends and always had a smile and kind word for everyone she met. She loved church and her church family most of all, next to her husband and her family, friends, and anyone she met.
On July 2, 1955, she married the love of her life, Richard J. Cherwinski, and they were to celebrate 70 years of marriage this July. Together they built a wonderful life while raising two kids and running a full-time farm, along with working at the Emenee and MarJay sewing factories. She would joke she went to work at the factory to get a rest.
She attended St. Casimir Catholic School and Kulpmont High School.
Some of her favorite things to do were teach Sunday school at Our Lady of Mercy Church; planting and growing flowers while always watching and feeding the birds; a great deal at a yard sale; baking her favorites; cruise vacations; pinochle, pokeno, and so many other games. Every summer you would find her canning her famous red beet recipe handed down from her mom. She also loved to tell stories of her childhood, and the nuns, and how she loved them; working at the factory and the fun she had with her work buddies. Most of all, she loved her Polish heritage and how proud she was of it, teaching Adam some of her favorite Polish phrases, which they did at the end of every day. Her favorites were “go with God” and “goodnight”. Summers were spent sitting on her front porch with Dick and her beloved pup, Peanut.
Joannie was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna; and her sisters: Cecelia (Bozza) and Claire (Postal).
Joannie is survived by her husband. Richard; son, Adam Cherwinski (Lynn); daughter, Debra Adams (Ken); grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and her faithful dog, Peanut.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 2, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Slabtown, with Father Martin Moran III officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Family will receive friends from noon until the time of service at the church.
