Karleen D. Smith (Fetterman) of Bloomsburg, beloved wife, mother, sister and "Mimi" passed from this life into the Loving Arms of her Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Her passing marked the end of a marriage that spanned 52 years on August 12 of this year. She was 74.
Karleen was born on May 22, 1950, to the late Karl and Margaret Fetterman.
She graduated from Bloomsburg High School in 1968 and Bloomsburg State College in 1972 with a BS in Elementary Education. She worked for several years at Geisinger Medical Center and was a substitute teacher for the Danville Area School District and the CSIU for 20 years. She also was organist and served as jr. choir/youth group director at the former St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Catawissa. She was an interim organist at First United Methodist Church in Catawissa as well as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, taught Bible School and Play Group and was the church prayer ministry coordinator. She especially loved spending time with family and friends. She loved going to contemporary Christian and oldies concerts. Music was an important part of her life.
She married Ted C. Smith II on August 12, 1972. She was a devoted mother to two children: Ted C. Smith III and wife Maria-Elena, Indianapolis, IN and Megan J. Rupp, wife of Michael of Bloomsburg. Karleen was a loving Mimi to three grandchildren: Armand Mitchell, Nicholas Anton, and Serena Diane. Her middle sister, Lona Surface of Charleston, SC survives as well as numerus nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her oldest sister, Renee I. Yocum on November 20, 2023.
Karleen had such incredible love for her grandchildren. We would journey to Indianapolis for all of their births and Christenings. We would visit as often as we could and bring them home twice a year during the fall and summer. It was extremely hard on her these last few years because we could no longer travel due to Karleen's health.
Karleen willed her body to science. She felt that by donating her body might bring life and hope to someone else who suffered from conditions such as hers.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on June 28, 2025 at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church, 228 South St., Catawissa.
As per Karleen's request, memorial gifts can be sent to First United Methodist Church, 228 South St., Catawissa, PA 17820 or the Animal Resource Center, P.O.Box 439, Bloomsburg, PA 17815
Our family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the EMS personnel that responded to transport Karleen to GMC and the doctors, nurses and patient services for their incredible, compassionate care.
