Phyllis (Roberts) Long, 96, of 504 N. 4th Street, Catawissa, PA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at her home surrounded by family. Phyllis was born in Catawissa on March 25, 1919, was the youngest daughter if Charles & Mary (Waters) Roberts, and the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was the beloved wife of Alvin B. Long, whom she married on June 20, 1941, and celebrated almost 66 years of marriage with before his death on March 31, 2007. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her siblings, Anna Sweitzer, Dorothy Schug, Donald Roberts, and Christine Billman. She is survived by her children, Thomas Long, Catawissa, Connie Wayes, wife of Charles, Marquette, MI, and Nancy Lurowist, wife of Ned, Bloomsburg, PA. Mrs. Long was very proud of her family, including grandchildren, Amy Doughty, Kristin Trenholm, Thomas Wayes, and Julie Lurowist, as well as great-grandchildren Sarah, Brooke, Jacob, Maren, Rachel, and Raina.
Mrs. Long was a lifelong resident of Catawissa & faithful lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Catawissa. She sang alto in the church choir, was an active member of the Dorcus class, Order of the Eastern Star, Daughter of the American Colonists (Miquon Chapter), and never missed voting day. She graduated salutatorian from Catawissa High School in 1937 and was the first May Queen. Phyllis loved traveling with her husband, had the privilege of visiting all 50 states, Europe, and South America, was often found fishing & camping, playing pinocle and euchre with friends, listening to music & books on tape, and spending time with her family.
After raising her children, Mrs. Long worked as a bank teller for over 20 years. She had a wonderful memory and sharp mind right up until her passing, and enjoyed many phone conversations with friends and family reliving stories of her youth. She will always be remembered for her love of jokes and infectious laugh. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, but is finally able to join the love of her life, whom she dearly missed.
Services will be Sunday November 29, 2015 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 228 South St., Catawissa, PA 17820 with her Pastor Lisa Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow Grace United Church of Christ Cemetery, Millgrove. Family will receive friends from 1:00 pm till time of service. Her family will be providing flowers, and is accepting cards of condolence at her residence. Contributions can be made in her memory to the Catawissa First United Methodist Church, 228 South Street, Catawissa, PA 17820.
