Thomas W. Vaughn, 84, of rural Catawissa left his earthly home for a better place at 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020. He and his twin sister were born at home in Williamsport on June 27, 1936, to parents William L. Vaughn and Lillian Juanita (nee Maneval) Vaughn (Rowskosky). After education in the Williamsport school system, he enlisted in the Army in 1955 at the age of 19 and served for nine years, which included 15 months in Korea.
After his discharge in 1964, he entered the retail business, training with Tri-State in Williamsport. He later worked for Ames Department Store and Kmart in Bloomsburg. When he retired from Kmart, he went to sharpening school in Missouri through Foley-Belsaw, then opened his own sharpening business at his residence, where he served many customers over the years. He retired from that in 2018 when health issues interfered.
Tom met his wife, the former Ruth Meek, when they both worked at Ames. His passing breaks a marriage of 48 years.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his twin sister, Marlene Gaskins, and two other sisters, Shirley Kopko and Carol Kohl; a son, Richard Vaughn; a grandson, Jason Vaughn; and great-grandchildren.
With his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Vaughn, and a stepfather, Leo Rowskosky.
Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, word search puzzles, and gathering at restaurants with the Kmart and PSAR groups. He was a member of VFW Post 8306 in Catawissa, serving in various roles. He was especially proud of being a member of the Honor Guard for military funerals.
A lifelong Lutheran, he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Numidia, where he served on church council many times and started the Men’s Bible Study group.
